Our junior recipient was nominated by Mrs. Heidersbach. She was recently moved by a scholarship application he submitted. This student’s application essay describes how memories of challenging personal circumstances remain with him and convinced him to live a life that makes others happy. He asserts that “we never know the mental state of another person…this is why I try to be the nicest person I can be to others.” He describes specific ways that he strives for that goal: helping others with schoolwork, being non-judgmental, providing advice, talking with others who need someone to listen, and relieving others of their daily struggles, all of which brings him “more joy than any physical object.” He concludes his essay by stating: “My goal is to be a positive person that people can come to when they need help all throughout the rest of my life.” That statement is a hallmark of a truly compassionate individual. To this student, compassion is not a random, occasional act, but an intentional part of his daily life.
Mrs Heidersbach continued that this student is mature beyond his chronological years, and she looks forward to meeting and congratulating him on his demonstrated character.
The recipient of the Pillar of Compassion Award at the junior level is Nicholas Batt.
