Amy (Ashyk) Ladwig '76 remains as enthusiastic about Elyria Catholic High School now as when she graduated in 1976. "I just love EC. I had such a great time in high school, making lifelong friendships, and ultimately EC prepared me for success at Miami of Ohio, my career, and in life," Ladwig explained. During a recent trip to California, EC President, Annie Heidersbach, and Director of Philanthropy and Engagement, Garen Distelhorst, spent a delightful evening with Amy near her home in Laguna Niguel.
Heidersbach described Ladwig as having infectious enthusiasm. "Amy is an absolute joy. Despite a major battle with cancer and some ongoing health challenges, she is as upbeat and positive as anyone I know. Amy is a “connector” in the truest sense of the word. She seems to know every EC alum in California and is determined to get them all together next time we visit."
During her time at Elyria Catholic Amy was a National Honor Society member, Head Majorette all four years, editor of The Challenge her junior year, and editor in chief as a senior. She served on Student Senate for her final three years, and French Club and Concert Band for four years. "I just loved being involved in high school. The EC community allowed me to develop leadership skills, confidence, and friendships that are still very important to me to this day,” said Ladwig.
After graduation, Ladwig continued her education at Miami University, earning her B.S. degree in Mass Communications with a minor in Music (piano). She was crowned Miss Miami University in 1978 and represented MU in the Miss Ohio Pageant, bringing home the Grand Talent Award. Upon graduation, Procter & Gamble recruited Amy, launching her career in sales and marketing management, which ultimately led her to California. Amy enjoyed a successful 40+ year career in the consumer products industry with blue chip companies such as P&G, Nabisco, and Kraft Foods. She retired from Avery Dennison office products as VP of Sales & Customer Marketing for North America.
"So much of my success and positive attitude is due to the extraordinary learning experiences, teachers, mentors, and friends at Elyria Catholic. I believe it was and still is a culture and community that gives students strong roots that allow them to bloom and grow,” said Ladwig.
Amy has one son, Chris, and lives with her husband, Don, and her beloved dog, Barkley in Laguna Niguel, CA. In her free time, she enjoys helping newly diagnosed cancer patients, playing piano, whale watching, dolphin safaris, and breathtaking Pacific sunsets.
