Elyria Catholic High School is committed to a culture of diversity and inclusion. Moreover, we recognize that support of diversity and inclusion tenets need to extend beyond words; it must result in responsive programs and processes. Elyria Catholic High School supports the need for systemic change in our nation. We must examine our culture and take tangible steps to ensure an inclusive and respectful environment for all. Elyria Catholic High School has established a Diversity & Inclusion Task Force that includes students, alumni, faculty, staff, and parents.
STEP 1: GATHER DATA
We will secure baseline data points regarding our school and students.
STEP 2: LISTEN AND LEARN
STEP 3: EXTERNAL REVIEW
The Task Force’s efforts will include compiling a diversity and inclusion audit, conducted by an outside expert, that will allow us to establish goals and objectives for an inclusive and equitable Elyria Catholic environment. As a first step, the Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio has presented a proposal and pricing
package for several programs, including a Culture & Climate Student Survey. The Climate Survey costs $3 per student (approximately $1,300) plus $5,000 for the assessment and report (total cost = $6,300). Annie Heidersbach has submitted two proposals for external funding to help support the survey and assessment. A faculty and staff climate and culture survey will be conducted in the future.
STEP 4: INITIATE ONGOING PROGRAMS AND PRACTICES
Elyria Catholic will develop student and staff curricular, co-curricular, and professional development opportunities in response to our findings in steps 2 and 3. Elyria Catholic alumna Sam Sleva, who conducts D & I professional workshops, has offered to present to faculty and staff; a professional development session is planned for January 2021. Elyria Catholic is committed to advancing these steps during the 2020 – 2021 academic year and further developing a space where all community members are equally valued and respected.
