Two New Scholarships Announced

Gary Hewitt ‘76 and Shirley (Thompson) Hewitt ‘77 recently visited Elyria Catholic to establish scholarships in honor and memory of their parents. Charles and Isabel Hewitt raised four children who graduated from Elyria Catholic (Cheryl ‘75, Gary ‘76, Sue ‘80, and Jeff ‘84). The Charles and Isabel Hewitt scholarship was established to honor Gary’s parents and express gratitude for their teaching of faith, which is the greatest gift you can bestow on anyone, and for providing a strong moral compass through their daily actions and endless love. This scholarship will honor a student who prioritizes faith and family in their daily lives and uses their education at Elyria Catholic to propagate these values.

Bob and Carol Thompson were married for 67 years and raised 5 children. Bob was an active Catholic his entire life and his wife Carol became a devoted Catholic upon their marriage. They were members of St. Jude Church and later St. Mary Church in Elyria for 64 years. They were also very active members of the Knights of Columbus Council 774.The Bob and Carol Thompson scholarship was established to honor Shirley’s parents for their dedication to and love for their Catholic faith and for nourishing this gift in their children. The scholarship will honor a student who believes very strongly in and is an exemplary model of living their Catholic faith.
