Elyria Catholic High School is pleased to announce the winners of the following two scholarships.
Nicholas Wells is the recipient of this year’s Albert P. Charnes Scholarship. The Al Charnes Scholarship Fund was established by the Charnes Family in 1990 to honor Al Charnes and recognize an Elyria Catholic senior with significant achievements in athletics, academics and service to school and the community. Nicholas was a 3 sport athlete for four straight years while maintaining excellent academic standing. Nicholas plans to study business and marketing at Otterbein University. Al Charnes was known for his twenty years of involvement with Little League and coaching of both CYO football and CYO basketball and eighteen years as a referee for high school basketball. He was referred to as a father of hundreds of young Elyrians as he followed them through their athletic careers.
Victor Ortiz II is the recipient of this year’s Dr. James L Kolopus Memorial Scholarship. Victor is Elyria Catholic’s Class of 2020 Valedictorian and has been a dedicated runner for the Track and Cross Country teams. Victor will be attending The Ohio State University to study aeronautical and astronautical engineering. The Dr. James L Kolopus Memorial Scholarship Fund was originally established by the Class of 1956 in 1971 upon the untimely death of James Kolopus a 1956 ECHS graduate, who at the age of 33 was a nuclear physicist and principal investigator of materials brought back from the Apollo Moon Missions. Dr. Kolopus was widely recognized as an accomplished solid-state scientist and author of some 33 publications.
