The tenth graders at Elyria Catholic are working on a documentary project. We have been studying a unit about telling our stories, and learning how stories connect people across a classroom or a culture. We have also discussed how the stories of the marginalized in society are not always told. Students have chosen a non-profit whose work interests them, and they will be creating a short documentary to highlight the work of the non-profit and tell their story. When finished, we will have a movie screening with a panel of Elyria Catholic experts, and the movie voted Best of Show will receive a stipend from a gracious donor to donate to their non-profit. This is a great way to use our communication skills to raise awareness and raise funds for the many people who do great work in our county.
Learning English in a classroom is important, but when you can interview, communicate, and write for a real world audience with an important message to convey, this takes learning to a new level. One of our goals is to have our students see how many people step up to help others on a daily basis.
Please stay tuned for our progress.
