Mrs. Heidersbach nominated our senior recipient. She was very impressed when a student stepped out of her comfort zone and followed up on her invitation to stop by her office for a visit. She states that this student took a risk. She seized an opportunity. She demonstrated excellence. Aligning with the advice of experts who believe that achieving excellence means taking some risks, this senior unknowingly demonstrated this Elyria Catholic pillar. Taking the risk of inviting herself to a lunch with the president, she revealed courage as she faced a school leader she did not know and opened herself to an uncertain response.
Together, they enjoyed a pizza lunch, engaging conversation, and laughter. Most importantly, they got to know one another. At the conclusion of the lunch, Mrs. Heidersbach told her that she needs to remember this lunch when she faces future uncertainty and risky situations. She drew on her courage to seize an opportunity. Taking that risk to achieve a goal (even one as seemingly minor as requesting a lunch with the President) requires courage to face the fear of uncertainty. No matter the outcome, a person grows through the process and becomes more resilient and confident. Building those skills helps in taking more risks and improves the chances of achieving future goals. And that is certainly a hallmark of excellence.
The recipient of the Pillar of Excellence Award at the senior level is Caroline Zawtocki.
